When in June 1977, Shapour Bakhtiar, Dariush Forouhar, and Karim Sanjabi, prominent figures of the National Front, wrote an open letter to Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, asking him to end tyranny, release prisoners, and uphold the constitution, few would have guessed that a year later, Shapour Bakhtiar would be the last prime minister of the monarchy in Iran. The letter from Shapour Bakhtiar and his friends to the Shah was boldly written, and the usual title of Aryamehr was not mentioned next to Pahlavi II's name, and its date was not the Shah's, but the solar Hijri calendar. A year later, the revolution reached its peak. The Shah dismissed three prime ministers and introduced Shapour Bakhtiar as prime minister before leaving Iran. The politician who called himself a storm bird was prime minister for only 37 days after 37 years of fighting the Shah's regime. After fleeing Iran, he became one of the main opponents of the Islamic Republic, went to Iraq, met with Saddam Hussein many times and, with his help, carried out a coup to overthrow the newly established government in Iran. After the failure of the Nojeh coup, Saddam invaded Iran, an attack that newly released British Foreign Office documents show was initiated with Bakhtiar's encouragement.
