This is a definite on- and off-road review of the Toyota Land Cruiser J250 series, looking at its problems and explaining how it fits into the 70-year Land Cruiser lineup alongside the 2024 Lexus GX550. The new Toyota Land Cruiser J250 series is no smaller but cheaper than the J200 it replaces. It’s also a step away from all the previous Land Cruisers that have cemented the brand’s reputation. For the first time, a Land Cruiser for the U.S. comes from the “Prado” sub-brand of lighter Land Cruisers. And for the first time, this vehicle is sold under the Lexus GX badge. It’s also a four-cylinder hybrid, another first for the Land Cruiser, and that powertrain creates some cargo space issues, as the battery is incompatible with the third row of seats and takes up cargo space. Cammisa heads to the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum in Salt Lake City and drives an FJ40, HJ61, HDJ81, as well as a TJH250 Land Cruiser and a VJA252 Lexus GX550. The story begins with the original Toyota-Jeep BJ, which used a Toyota B-Series six-cylinder engine, a copy of the Chevrolet Stovebolt Six of the late 1920s. After a major update, the BJ became the FJ20, which was the first Land Cruiser sold in the U.S. (for the 1958 model year). Its reincarnation, the FJ40, lasted for almost 40 more years! But the cars we know in America as Land Cruisers belong to a different branch of the family tree: the Land Cruiser Station Wagon. It started with the FJ55 of the 1970s, known as the Iron Pig – but the formula finally came together with the FJ60 of 1980. And then there’s the later 80 series, which is the archetype of the Land Cruiser as an American SUV for the secretive rich. It was replaced by the 100 and 200 series Land Cruisers, which didn’t sell particularly well, and so its replacement, the 300 series Land Cruiser, is sold in America only as the Lexus LX600. The Land Cruiser formula seems to work better with the Lexus badge – combining capability and luxury. But Toyota has a branding problem: the four-cylinder Land Cruiser, the six-cylinder GX550 and LX600 are now all the same car. Technically, the LC and GX are J250s and the LX is a J300 Land Cruiser, but the cars share a wheelbase and much of the same equipment. That means the lines between Land Cruiser and Lexus are blurred, blending in with the Prado lineup. What's clear, however, is that the Lexus GX550 solves most of the J250 Land Cruiser's problems.
