How to Sow Onions. Growing Onions from Seed Sowing onions as seedlings in pots allows you to start the growing season earlier. Here are the steps to do it: Choose pots or containers with good quality seedling soil that is light and permeable to ensure adequate drainage and help the onion roots develop. Scatter the onion seeds on the surface of the soil, trying to spread them evenly. You can also use special seedling trays with single cells, sowing 2-3 seeds in each cell. Gently cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil - about 1 cm thick. Then lightly mist the soil with water using a sprayer so as not to disturb the seed distribution. Place the pots in a warm place and provide them with access to light. Onions need a temperature of around 20°C and good lighting to germinate. Water the seedlings regularly but carefully, keeping the soil moist but not soggy to prevent the seeds from rotting. Once the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted into larger pots if they are too crowded. Before planting the seedlings in the ground, harden them off for a few days by exposing them outside for increasingly longer periods to acclimate them to the outdoor conditions. By starting onions from seedlings, you can speed up the time to harvest and increase the chances of producing healthy, strong plants.
