To play the samba rhythm, it is important to understand the rhythmic function of the right hand. First, the thumb needs to mark the strong beats of the song, consistently, accompanying the percussion instrument (surdo). Then, fingers 1, 2 and 3 need to pluck the highest strings of the guitar with a certain swing characteristic of samba and pagode, basically imitating a tambourine. Often, the fingers of the right hand can also play fingerpicking to bring more variability to your sound. Try not to stick to a single beat. In this video, we will teach you a simple way to play samba on the guitar, then we will show you ways to vary and improve this beat to make it more beautiful and catchy. And finally, we will show you how to reharmonize the chords to bring even more beauty to the song. The rhythm we teach in this samba class also works for pagode and bossa nova, with slight variations. Although it is a rhythm for intermediate level students, if you are a beginner you can also play the simplified version.
