Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that brings signs that affect the person's life in social and communication issues, with rigid, repetitive and stereotyped behavior patterns. High abilities/giftedness is not a developmental disorder. It brings with it the individual's characteristics a high potential of aptitudes, talents and skills. The person does not necessarily need to have an IQ above 130 to be considered a person with high abilities and giftedness. In both autism and AHSD, the person may present issues related to sensory disorders. They may have restricted interests in certain subjects. They may have difficulty in social interaction. But it is important to understand how these issues manifest themselves in each of the cases: autism and AHSD. To explain the differences between autism and high abilities/giftedness, we invited neuropediatrician Dr. Mariane Whemuth to explain both.
