SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHANNEL BY CLICKING THE LINK BELOW: / @technologycursosoficial Introduction: When resisting the passage of electric current, every resistor tends to heat up, which is why its casing must be able to withstand this heating. In this video, you will learn how to identify the dissipation power of metal film and carbon film resistors by observing the size of their casing. Definition: Power is the work performed by a device in a given time. For there to be power, the device must be under the action of a voltage and a current must be established. Area of application: Dissipation power is mainly found in components, circuits and devices that are purely resistive, such as electric heaters, irons, electric showers, resistors, etc. Operating principle: When an electric current passes through it, the resistor prevents all the current from the source from circulating through the circuit, transforming the portion of current not consumed into heat, which will be dissipated into the air. The greater the heat dissipation that the resistor has to dissipate into the air, the larger its size must be. This is why you find resistors with different dissipation power. The most common dissipation powers of carbon resistors are: 1/16W, 1/8W, 1/4W, 1/2W, 1W and 2W. The most common dissipation powers of metal film resistors are: 1W, 2W, 3W, 4W and 5 W. It is worth noting that the dissipation power of resistors, both carbon film and metal film, is related to the size of their casings. In this case, a carbon resistor with dimensions of 3.5mm in length and 1.8mm in diameter can dissipate a maximum power of 1/8W (0.125W). A metal film resistor with these same dimensions can dissipate 1W of power. Conclusion: We can identify the dissipation power of carbon and metal film resistors by their size, always taking the size of the 1/8W resistor as a basis. I hope that by the end of this class you will be able to identify the resistor's power by its size, whether it is carbon or metal film to maintain the originality of the circuit and the survival of the resistor itself.
