Hernandes Dias Lopes was born in Nova Venécia, Espírito Santo. He is married to Udemilta Pimentel Lopes and is the father of Mariana and Thiago, his daughter-in-law Renata, his son-in-law Rafael, his grandson Bento and his granddaughter Chloe. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Theology at the Southern Presbyterian Seminary in Campinas, São Paulo, from 1978 to 1981, and his Doctorate in Ministry at the Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, in the United States, from 2000 to 2001. He was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Bragança Paulista from 1982 to 1984, and since 1985 he has been pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Vitória. He is also a member of the Evangelical Academy of Letters of Brazil, executive director of Luz para o Caminho in Campinas, and a collaborating pastor at the Presbyterian Church of Pinheiros in São Paulo.
