Right off the bat, I'll tell you, there's no such thing as a definitive and easy solution! If there were, whoever discovered it would be a millionaire, right? The truth is that babies do wake up at night, and that's very, very, very normal. They wake up to nurse, because they have gas, because their diaper is dirty, because they're sick, because they're having a crisis, or for a variety of other reasons. 00:00 - Opening 01:41 - Tip 1 05:47 - Tip 2 07:35 - Tip 3 08:55 - Tip 4 10:07 - Tip 5 11:06 - Tip 6 12:00 - Tip 7 13:35 - Tip 8 13:57 - Tip 9 If there's no single solution that works for everyone to help babies sleep through the night, what can we do? - Keep expectations low. Don't expect your baby to sleep through the night. Maybe, when you do this, this miracle will happen (it happened to me, with Leo). Remember that it is normal for the baby to wake up. And for many different reasons. When a mother says that her baby sleeps all night, ask her what “all night” is for her. 5 hours straight can already be considered all night. - Don’t let the baby stay up past bedtime. Babies who go to bed exhausted sleep much worse. - Nighttime sleep ritual. Invest in a bath and bedtime ritual that helps the baby relax and sleep better. - Take care of daytime naps. Babies who sleep well during the day also sleep well at night. - Don’t rush to answer the first little noise. Don’t rush to get your baby out of bed at the first sign of a noise he makes. Observe him before going to him. Many times, it is just a noise that he makes while he is sleeping and if you went to him you could wake him up. - But don’t leave him crying either. There are lines that train the baby to sleep all night by letting him cry. I am not in favor of that, personally. So, my suggestion is this: if the baby wakes up, before he/she becomes completely desperate because he/she was not attended to, go to him/her and attend to him/her. This way, he/she will go back to sleep more easily. - Focus on the nighttime feeding or invest in the 11pm feeding. Do your best to make sure the baby breastfeeds a lot during the last feeding before going to bed. Or, get the baby out of bed at 11pm so that he/she gets an extra dose of food (known as the dream feeding). - A safe, comfortable, calm environment with the right temperature. Make sure that the baby's room has the ideal temperature and lighting. - Safely sharing a bed helps the baby sleep through the night, but it can be a challenge to break the habit later.
