Introduction: Repairing the power supply board of a Digital TV (or any other equipment) by removing and testing several components is exhausting for anyone. By following the 4-step rule, this task becomes much easier because you can quickly reach a diagnosis, isolate the defective stage and find the damaged component(s) in less time. In this video I show how I fixed the power supply board of our classroom's Digital TV by following the 4-step rule to help me find the damaged component(s). Definition: The 4-step rule is a diagnostic technique that uses a logical sequence of reasoning that guides any technician or beginner to find the defective component on an electronic circuit board. Application area: The 4-step rule is used to diagnose notebook, digital TV, smartphone, UPS, mini and micro system boards, etc. Application practice: The 4-step rule has 4 well-defined steps: 1st) Analysis 2nd) Diagnosis 3rd) Isolation of the Defective Stage 3rd) Location of the Defective Component Step 1: The analysis is divided into two stages: Static and Dynamic. In the static analysis, the digital TV must be disconnected from the power supply and the filter capacitors of the switched-mode power supply must be discharged to avoid the risk of electric shock. In this stage of the analysis, you will use the four senses to detect anomalies both on the board, from the point of view of overheating or oxidation of the tracks, as well as in the components of the digital TV power supply board, looking for components with liquid leaks, burnt, broken, oxidized, poorly connected components, etc. 2nd Step If you do not find any problems from a visual point of view in the static analysis of the digital TV power supply, you should start the dynamic analysis by connecting the equipment to the electrical network. Now, with the help of a digital multimeter, you should take measurements of each stage of the digital TV power supply, always starting the measurement at the input of a stage and finishing the measurement at the output of that same stage. If at a certain stage you measure the input voltage but are unable to measure the output voltage, you now have a diagnosis: this stage of the digital TV switching power supply that you are measuring is not working, because it receives the voltage at the input but does not make it available at the output. 3rd Step: With the diagnosis in hand, you must perform the third step of the 4-step rule, which is to isolate the entire stage that is not indicating a voltage value at the output. 4th Step: After isolating the defective stage, you must locate the defective component, using suitable equipment and instruments. If you do not have such instruments or equipment, remove them from the digital TV power supply board and test them with an analog multimeter. Testing the components of the defective stage will reveal that one of them is defective, causing the digital TV switching power supply to malfunction or become inoperative. Conclusion: I hope that, by the end of this class, you will be able to analyze a digital TV switching power supply in a practical way, following the guidance of the 4-step rule. I really hope you enjoy this explanation and that you start applying the 4-step rule in your daily life, enabling you to find the damaged component(s) on a board quickly, safely and more easily.
