Modern literature is a period in the history of literature that spans from the late 19th century to the present day. During this period, writers began to approach themes, structure works, and relate to the public in different ways. Some characteristics of modern literature are: Opposition to the restrictions of realist literature Introduction of new stylistic elements Non-linear narrative structure Appreciation of regional and colloquial language Formal freedom in poetry Free verse Unconcern with formal standards Approach to subjective, original, critical, sarcastic, and ironic language Modernism was a cultural movement that began in the 1890s and was characterized by the search for innovation. Modernists broke with traditional means of organizing literature and questioned the illogical and incoherent nature of society at the time. In Brazil, modernism was conceived and led by a group of artists, including Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Menotti Del Picchia, and Anita Malfatti.
