These are recurring questions among home studio owners and we are going to answer them today in a very different way than they are usually answered on YouTube... So that, instead of replicating like a headless chicken the parameters and configurations that you have seen in a 5-minute video, you learn to apply compression to your Kicks analytically and always get the result you have designed. So that the use of your compressors is not a lottery, but something thoughtful and controlled. We will start by remembering what dynamic treatment is and the role of compression within it. Next, I'm going to propose a simple 3-Step Compression Method: 1. Analysis of the raw kick drum to understand its sound needs with respect to the mix and the musical style we're working on. 2. Design of the final sound we want to achieve and search for Dynamic Problems that we must solve to achieve it. 3. Correction of all these problems found with native and free dynamic treatment plugins and verification that we are getting what we had set out to do. In fact, we will start by doing an analysis of three very different types of kick drums and we will try to understand what sound result we intend to achieve BEFORE launching the first plugin. You will see that one of them is a sample (whose dynamic range is zero), while the other two are kick drums played by a human drummer (and with very different dynamic ranges). We will design the theoretical final sound of each one of them and, only after being super clear about where we want to get to on a sound level, we will apply dynamic treatment with free plugins. I hope that today's exercise will help you not only to go deeper into the dynamic treatment of your Kicks, but also to implement a methodology based on your ANALYSIS and the design of the FINAL SOUND you are looking for before processing anything. Here, neither the plugin nor the parameters matter, but the engineer and his conscious decisions. That is the real secret of success.
