What length of column is needed and how to choose a nozzle? Such questions are often asked by novice distillers. I will try to answer in the most understandable language, without complex formulas and calculations. The basis of any distillation column is the column, and the most important and expensive element is the nozzle. Here we will consider the most widely used and, in my opinion, the best packing - SPN. The Spiral Prismatic Packing also has one drawback, it is probably one of the most expensive among its competitors. The packing in the column has two capabilities - throughput and holding (separating) capacity. Let's start with the throughput. It has been established empirically (easy to check) that SPN 3.5x3.5 has a throughput of 90 W per cm2 of the column cross-section. This means that if you take a theoretical column with a cross-section of 1 cm2 and fill it with SPN 3.5x3.5 mm, then such a column will choke at a supplied power of 90 W. Thus, we can calculate that for a 2-inch column, the nominal operating power with a 3.5x3.5mm SPN nozzle will be equal to Sx90 W=20 cm 2x90 W=1800 W, respectively, for a 3-inch column, the area of which is 40 cm2, the maximum operating power will be 3600 W.
