The 'Beopseongge', which summarized the 60-volume Avatamsaka Sutra, known as the 'King of Buddhist Scriptures', in 7-30 verses and 210 Chinese characters by Great Monk Uisang, is said to be the epitome of the 84,000-verse sutra. We met Professor Kim Seong-cheol (63), a professor of Buddhist studies at Dongguk University's Gyeongju Campus (and honorary chairman of the Buddhist Society), who recently published 'The Jewel of the Beopseongge that Embraces the Avatamsaka Sutra' (published by Otaku Publishing), which explains it. Professor Kim is a dentist. He graduated from Seoul National University's College of Dentistry and worked as a dentist before majoring in Indian Buddhism at Dongguk University's graduate school. 'Buddhist studies' may have been inevitable for him. He would often meet Monk Tanheo at his home when he was young, whom his father, Professor Kim Jong-seo, who served as the Dean of Seoul National University's College of Education and the advisory professor of the Seoul National University Buddhist Student Association, sometimes brought to his house. Monk Tanheo's appearance, which was that of a saint but was extremely humble and consistently 'hasim' (a mind that humbles oneself and elevates others), left a deep impression on him as a child. With his passion for Buddhist studies, he swept the Gasan Academic Award, Bul-il Sang, Cheongsong Academic Award, and Banya Academic Award. He was also selected as the 'National Research Foundation of Korea Representative Research Achievement of the Last Decade' for his research on Goguryeo monk Seungrang, who is considered the first thinker in Korea 150 years before Wonhyo. He has been a professor in the Department of Buddhist Studies at Dongguk University's Gyeongju Campus since 2000, and has served as the Dean of the College of Buddhist Culture, Director of the Institute of Buddhist Society and Culture, Director of the Institute of Tibetan Canon Studies, and Editor-in-Chief of Buddhist Review.
