On December 31, 1999, Panama regained control of the canal that runs through its country. Thus ended a wait of more than eight decades, since the United States completed construction of the canal. It did so in 1914, completing a pharaonic work and after a French company had also tried a few years earlier, although without success. But the construction of this canal also brought with it a zone of control around it that in practice functioned as if it were a country within another country.
