The Rothschilds have been in the international news since the second half of the 18th century. The Rothschild family is a family of Jewish origin belonging to the Ashkenazi community, descendants of the Jews who settled in the Rhine Valley during the Middle Ages. The activities in which Jewish families were traditionally specialized revolved around crafts, trade and financial lending. In particular, in the field of international finance it was not uncommon to hear about Jewish families before the 18th century, but they were not the only ones. On the one hand, families had accumulated capital thanks to trade and crafts. On the other, there was a high level of literacy and financial literacy. As well as a vast international network of families able to communicate with each other, based on relationships of trust. Jewish families, forced by Emperor Frederick III of Germany, had settled in the Judengasse since 1462 and the few houses on the avenue had been marked with symbols that over time became identifiers of the families. Mayer Amschel Rothschild, born in 1744, is considered the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty: starting from Mayer, an uninterrupted family tree can be reconstructed that reaches all the Rothschilds still alive today, scattered throughout Europe. And this is only by following the male descendants of the family who were able to pass on the surname. In 1806, Nathan Mayer Rothschild, son of Amschel, married Hannah Barent Cohen, daughter of Levy Barent Cohen, an Ashkenazi Jewish merchant among the wealthiest in London: the man who until a few days before had been a successful and brilliant trader, was finally able to access the widest commercial contacts with the English nobility and bourgeoisie. Nathan thus allowed the Rothschild family to expand. Once he understood the mechanism, his father Mayer Amschel Rothschild renamed his company to Rothschild and sons, involving the other four brothers who remained with him. In fact, laying the foundations for the international financial empire that was gradually being built. There are still 45 offspring of the Rothschild family alive between the English branch and the French branch. Each generation has somehow managed to move and maintain part of the empire. The bank still today deals with assisting large financial operations, especially in mergers and acquisitions at an international level. But it also manages assets and offers loans and investments in private companies. In the world of consultancy, Rothschild is the second largest company in the world in terms of number of deals managed after Goldman Sachs and the eighth in terms of turnover.
