The 1993 Giro was the 76th edition of the race. The race started from Porto Azzurro on 23 May with a stage divided into two parts: the first was a mass stage and the second an individual time trial. The race concluded on 13 June with a 166 km (103.1 mi) stage from Biella to Milan. Twenty teams entered the race, which was won by Miguel Induráin of the Banesto team. Second and third respectively were Latvian Piotr Ugrumov and Italian Claudio Chiappucci. Indurain's victory in the 1993 Giro was the first step in completing the Giro-Tour double: winning the Giro and the Tour in a calendar year, becoming the first cyclist to repeat this feat in consecutive years. Moreno Argentin was the first rider to wear the race leader's pink jersey after winning the opening stage. Argentin held the lead for another ten days before losing it to Miguel Induráin after the conclusion of stage 10. Bruno Leali took the lead from Indurain after stage 11 and held it until the end of the fourteenth day of racing. Indurain gained the lead after the 14th mountain stage and held it until the Giro's finish in Milan. Indurain became the first Spanish rider to win the Giro in consecutive years. Among the other classifications awarded by the race, Italian Adriano Baffi of Mercatone Uno-Zucchini-Medeghini won the points race, Claudio Chiappucci of Carrera Jeans-Tassoni won the mountains classification, Pavel Tonkov of Lampre-Polti finished the Giro as the best rider aged 25 or younger in the general classification, finishing fifth overall, and Ján Svorada of Lampre-Polti won the intergiro race. Lampre-Polti was the winner of the team classification, which saw each of the twenty competing teams win based on the shortest cumulative time. Ariostea won the team points classification. #Cycling, #Doping, #Sport
