The Negro and Solimões rivers meet right next to Manaus (AM). And you can clearly see where these two rivers meet, because their waters don’t mix and have different colors. Of course, we had to go and see this phenomenon up close! The Solimões river is the largest and comes from the Andes, so it comes out of the mountains very quickly and ends up tearing up earth along the way, resulting in muddy and opaque water. The Negro river comes from a flatter region that floods, so it receives many more leaves, branches and tree trunks. All this material dissolves, forming a kind of “black tea”! All this also changes the acidity of the water. The Solimões has a pH of 7.0, while the Negro river has a pH of 5.5, which even influences the animals that live in each one!
