How much do young people know about abuse? - interview with Júlia Spronz Dr. Júlia Spronz is a lawyer, her main area of expertise is the protection of victims of domestic and intimate partner violence. In addition to her decades of experience as a lawyer, she is also the founder of the PATENT association, which is the only Hungarian civil society organization that provides legal advice to victims of gender-based violence. In the latest broadcast of Mozinet Nagylátószög, Alinda Veiszer talks to her about the film Miénk lanás a hölna, which is already in cinemas, about how much the current laws help victims of violence against women, and whether there is a way to shape social attitudes. Mozinet's new presentation deals with questions such as whether it is possible to make a film about women's equality and, indeed, domestic violence that is entertaining, humorous and relatable at the same time? Delia does the impossible every day – she works at home and at work, keeps the family nest in order, takes care of the children and elderly family members, and endures the tantrums of her husband, who has been through the war. The tireless woman does everything she can to ensure that her daughter, who is about to get married, does not suffer a similar fate, but her efforts seem in vain. However, a letter addressed to her inspires her to an unusually courageous act. “We have campaigned for many years to ensure that domestic violence is not depicted in these visual representations with women in monocles and raised fists, because it is very traumatizing for those involved.” Spronz says of Tomorrow Will Be Ours that she is fortunate that the film depicts violence in a stylized manner, in the form of music and dance scenes, so it is able to initiate a discourse without traumatizing those involved. The film takes away the edge of violence, but also leaves room for everyday aggressions, which, like hidden streams, weave through the relationship of the main characters. “Up until 1997, it was legal in Hungary to commit rape within a marital relationship to the detriment of the wife. But this has now been remedied. What is not, however, is that these sexual crimes are still only punishable if the victim initiates the procedure, and this has been done within one month of the act.” Regarding the current legal options, Spronz says that he considers them to be quite narrowly tailored for victims of violence. In the case of other crimes, proceedings are only initiated ex officio, if the victim initiates it, and this has been done within a total of one month after the act. This is a very short time, considering that many victims need years to reach a state of mind that allows them to undergo such a procedure. “This application of the law has a very tangible, practical effect, but really, the message is that domestic violence is not so interesting to us, statesmen, that we should act against it with the same vehemence as against any other crime.” Miénk will be in cinemas tomorrow, January 2nd! The program Nagylátószög, which distributes Hungarian and foreign award-winning art films, aims to introduce exciting perspectives through guests who are experts in various fields. The discussions on Nagylátószög are not so much about specific films, but rather create context for the films – thus becoming both informative film and everyday discourse. Two permanent hosts, Alinda Veiszer and Gellért Kovács Filmszerész, talk to the invited guests. The former explores the topics raised by the films with public figures and experts, while the latter explores the layers of meaning and background of the current film with creators or film critics and film aesthetes. The quotes used in the text have been edited and published.
