McLaren has this year achieved what was once thought impossible: winning the Formula One world championship as a customer team. True, it has “only” won the constructors’ title – the lowest in the eyes of a world obsessed with the drivers’ championship – but it is a huge achievement for the team. Not only does it bring a big payday, with prize money paid out based on position in the constructors’ championship, but it also ends a 15-season title drought for McLaren. And it is a title won while dependent on a supply deal for a customer power unit from Mercedes. This was something that, just six years ago, McLaren’s then racing director, Eric Boullier, said could not be done without being a works team. You could win races, he argued, but not a championship.
