Russian architecture is primarily wooden construction, and carved window frames can rightfully be considered the hallmark of Russia. This unique tradition is found almost nowhere else. Unfortunately, historical buildings are falling apart, and window frames are disappearing along with them. People do not want to live in dilapidated houses, and local authorities do not help them with repairs and improvements. There is a law in Russia that protects folk art and crafts, but it does not include wooden window frames. Preservation of cultural heritage remains the work of enthusiasts. Former IT specialist Ivan Khafizov has been doing this for almost 15 years. He founded a virtual window frame museum (http://nalichniki.com/), published a book about it, and recently launched the production of a wooden window frame constructor with the help of crowdfunding. Together with Khafizov, ROMB went to Tver and Kostroma to understand how to save the old days from oblivion and demolition.
