More than half of parents with a 'care-intensive' child suffer from burnout. More than forty percent experience relationship problems. Care-intensive children and their parents need a lot of support due to a disability, disorder or illness. According to the Youth Act, municipalities must provide that help. But many parents do not even know what support they are entitled to. Or they get lost in the jungle of counters and regulations. Take Peter and Esther. Their daughter Indy (5) has a rare chromosomal abnormality, which causes epilepsy, ADHD, autism and developmental delay. They repeatedly tell the municipality that they are running out of steam and need more help. Because it takes too long for that support to arrive, Indy ends up in emergency shelter for 2.5 weeks.
