The main party continued to be the liberal one, led by Ionel Brătianu, IG Duca and Gheorghe Tătărescu, which was opposed by the nationalist-peasants of Iuliu Maniu and Ion Mihalache. The fundamental law, i.e. the constitution, adopted in 1923 was one of the most modern on the European level and established the constitutional monarchy as a form of government.
