Herman lay for hours in total solitude in the cold water of the North Sea, waiting for help... On 8 May 2013, aerial photographer Herman IJsseling was commissioned to photograph a ship from the air. Dense fog and low-hanging clouds caused poor visibility that day. Herman and his pilot tried to fly under the clouds to find the ship. Suddenly, they saw the water just below the plane and crashed. Herman: 'I thought: the chance that I would survive this is minimal. The only thing that mattered was that I had to persevere.' How does he look back on the plane crash and his rescue? In the series 'Rescued' we take you along in the intense stories of people who were rescued. We go back to that exciting moment when their lives were hanging by a thread. They tell how they experienced this and what impact it had on them. Sometimes we speak to them weeks after the accident, sometimes years.
