We generally refer to “secularization” as this phenomenon that would have seen Western societies free themselves from the reign of religion. And we consider that it is an internal process in Europe, revealing its modernity. The philosopher Mohamad Amer Meziane debunks this story. In his book “Des empires sous la terre” (La Découverte, 2021), he offers a completely different story. For him, there has never been a decline in religion, we have simply started to sacralize other things. And the proclamation of a world emancipated from God has fundamentally been a tool of Western imperialism and industrialization. What is the relationship between secularization and colonialism?
