A hedge is part of most properties and regardless of whether it is cypress, arborvitae, privet or cherry laurel, the hedges have to be trimmed so that they do not expand uncontrollably and overgrow the garden. Motivation is secondary in this task. Whether viewed as a beloved hobby or a chore, using the right tool to trim the hedge is crucial to success and enjoyment at work. So far I have trimmed my hedges with the Makita DUH523 hedge trimmer. There is a video that I have linked to in the top right. To make my work a little easier, I have now treated myself to the DUN500W hedge trimmer. The purchase decision was based on its length of 211 cm and the possibility of using the blade folded, which I will now show you. The power supply is provided by Makita's tried and tested 18-volt battery system. The blade is 500 mm long and can be operated at three different speeds. There is also a reverse gear that can be used to release the cutting blades if a branch is too stubborn. The hedge trimmer is well and safely packaged in a cardboard box. Makita has fortunately dispensed with fillers such as polystyrene, which I don't like anyway. I will put the warranty conditions and liability information aside for now and take a look at the operating instructions. As is usual with Makita, these are very well illustrated and show, among other things, how to replace the blade. However, I will deal with this if necessary. The workmanship is, as I have come to expect from Makita, flawless. The feel, from the first handling to later use, leaves nothing to be desired. Buttons and levers are easy to operate, and with a sound power level of 92 dB, no neighbor will be able to complain about the noise of the device. Unlike other Makita cordless devices, the battery holder has a kind of half cage made of sheet metal, which provides additional protection for the battery. All important information about the device is recorded on the type plate, because let's be honest, nobody keeps the packaging permanently. A shoulder strap is included in the scope of delivery for relaxed working. However, with a weight of only around 4 kilograms, I will first try using the machine without the strap. When you take a closer look at the folding mechanism, you can see the high quality with which Makita has made this device. Then you also understand what you paid for, because the device is by no means cheap. Incidentally, under the video you will find a link to the current offer on Amazon for this device, if you don't already have it. The blade is 50 cm long, made of stainless steel and razor-sharp. So it would not be a good idea to test whether skin, tissue and bone can resist the blade. The blade doesn't care what it cuts, but we do. For this reason, before switching on, the power button must always be pressed briefly before the lock and lever can be operated. A sliding mechanism can be used to release the locking of the joint and position the head in 6 levels with different angles. It is easy to use: press the power button to activate the machine. Press it again to select the desired stroke rate - 2000, 3600 or 4400. The device switches off after a few moments if no further action is taken. The cutting edges are not quiet during operation, but they are also not as unpleasant as the noise of a compressor, for example. Every neighbor should be able to tolerate that, at least compared to some other noises. The R button, where R stands for reverse, can be used to unblock the saw blade. The saw blade is positioned almost flush with the one underneath. But now it's finally time to get down to practice and I'll show you the hedge trimmer in live action.
