Today I want to show you how each of the seven Gregorian, Greek or Church modes sounds. To do this, we will take the same melody and play it in each of them, but most importantly, I will show you what changes in each version so that you can easily get to the modes. As an example, we will use the song Europa by Carlos Santana. This song is originally in C minor. We will start our journey through the modes by playing C Dorian, C Phrygian and C Locrian to cover all the minor modes. Then we will go on to study the major modes. We will do the song in the key of C major, then we will do it in C Lydian and finally in C Mixolydian. Something I want you to note is that if you know the major and minor scales, you can easily learn the modes, since if we group them by families, we will see that Dorian, Phrygian and Locrian differ from each other by only one note, two in the case of Locrian. In the case of the majors it is the same, if we group them, major scale, lydian and mixolydian, these differ from each other by only one note, therefore if we understand this principle we will get to the modes easily.
