A photocoupler (or optocoupler, photoisolator, etc.) is a component used to isolate two circuits and enable optical (infrared) control from one circuit to the other. The use of an optocoupler is highly recommended in situations where one of the circuits is noisy and could affect the signal source circuit. It is also recommended in cases where the power supplies need to be separated. With an optocoupler, it is possible to completely isolate the power supplies.
