A "diversion" is always spoken of when a train travels a route other than that specified in its timetable. There are various reasons for this, which are examined in this film, with the focus on short-term diversions due to operational disruptions. Among other things, it explains who initiates a diversion or is involved in the decision-making process and which requirements must be checked and met. There are also digressions on supposed diversions that are not diversions at all, and on real diversions that you only notice are actually diversions upon closer inspection.
