Traumatization is by no means rare. It is not only physical violence or extreme deprivation that has a traumatic effect, but also deep insults, bullying or withdrawal of love. Trauma inflicted on children is particularly serious. Whether those affected also develop mental illness depends less on the severity of the experience than on the frequency of it, says psychotraumatologist Maggie Schauer. People who had a secure childhood are better able to cope with a natural disaster or an escape later on. However, trauma-related illnesses need to be treated not only because of the enormous suffering they cause, but also because they have a great potential for danger if left untreated: trauma is not only passed on, but often leads to outbreaks of violence.
