The world-wide Ottoman state had undoubtedly brought down its rivals in Europe by the 16th century and expanded the borders of the Empire from Hungary to Yemen. However, the Ottomans, who began to lose their dominance towards the end of the 17th century, fell behind “modern times”. This backwardness was met with a great modernization and Westernization storm.
