The world-wide Ottoman state had undoubtedly brought down its rivals in Europe by the 16th century and expanded the borders of the Empire from Hungary to Yemen. However, the Ottomans, who began to lose their dominance towards the end of the 17th century, fell behind “modern times”. This backwardness was met with a great modernization and Westernization storm. Since then, from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, from Ahmet Cevdet Pasha to Ziya Gökalp, from Mahmud II to Turgut Özal, while our history has followed similar paths, we have also tried to keep up with the changing and transforming world. We are examining these long, critical and quite winding 300 years in our new series as 49W. The Political History of Turkey series prepared by Mehmet Yaşar Altundağ will start from the Treaties of Karlowitz and Passarowitz and continue to the AK Party Turkey. In this section, Yaşar examines the practices implemented during the Tulip Era, the identity of İbrahim Müteferrika, the story of the officers who came from Europe, and why the Ottoman Empire fell behind in military terms. Why did the printing press come to the Ottoman Empire late? Did the calligraphers really not want it? Why were the projects of the French Protestants not accepted? Why were the Janissaries against the reforms? All of these are in this section.
