For nearly forty years, the country lurched between tolerance and intolerance, peace and war, Huguenots and Catholics, while conflicts that took place as much at court as on the battlefield ravaged the kingdom. These Wars of Religion challenged royal authority, threw the country to foreign powers and disrupted the lives of its inhabitants. This situation continued until a king, Henry IV, managed to reconquer his country by arms, edicts and gold, restoring peace to the country and preparing it for its entry into its Grand Siècle.
