About :

On August 12, 2000, the Russian submarine Kursk K-141 sank at a depth of about 108 meters during a training exercise in the Barents Sea, causing the biggest accident in Russian naval history: the causes of the tragic shipwreck were both human and military. But how did the Kursk submarine sink? And what were the consequences of the disaster? In this video, we retrace the history of the sunken Russian submarine and, thanks to previously unreleased 3D reconstructions, we show what it looked like, what happened in the Barents Sea, and what happened to it after the shipwreck. The explosion of the first torpedo on board caused a fire, which in turn caused other torpedoes to explode, sinking the submarine and killing the 118 military personnel on the crew. It was August 12, 23 years ago, and this episode quickly became a source of embarrassment for the Russian government, given the way the rescue and recovery operations were carried out. The K-141 Kursk, launched in 1994, was a nuclear-powered submarine and was the most modern submarine in the Russian Navy at the time. It was 154 meters long, 18 meters wide, 9 meters high and was powered by 2 nuclear reactors. The typical crew consisted of 52 officers and 55 sailors - although on some occasions it could carry even more people - and it operated with the Northern Fleet, at a base on the Kola Peninsula. What made it so famous, however, was its armament: it could carry and launch nuclear-tipped missiles, as well as conventional torpedoes. 00:00 The sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk K-141 01:06 What the K-141 looked like and where it operated 01:35 The nuclear armament of the Russian submarine 02:00 The Summer-X exercise 02:50 How did the Kursk sink?
