New children's podcast on climate change & energy transition: https://klimafuechse.podigee.io/ Why do e-bike batteries start to burn? Do e-bike batteries burn more often than other batteries? How should you handle your battery to ensure a long service life? #Electric bicycles, often referred to as e-bikes, have quickly become a symbol of sustainable urban #mobility and offer an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional means of transport. The crucial component, the e-bike's #battery, is more often in the media in connection with fires. In New York last year there were even over a hundred fires and several fatalities. We investigate the reasons for the fires with Martin Eschler from TÜV SÜD Battery Testing GmbH and Dr. Vikram Godbole from Bosch eBike Systems and discuss whether e-bike batteries generally pose a safety risk. Electric bike batteries come in different shapes, sizes and chemical compositions, each designed to provide a balanced ratio of performance, range and longevity. Lithium-ion batteries are the most commonly used battery type in e-bikes due to their high energy density, lightweight construction and relatively long service life. Factors such as temperature, usage behavior and charging habits can affect the service life of the battery. Proper care and maintenance, such as storing the battery in a cool, dry place and avoiding deep discharges, are crucial. In the Geladen podcast, Patrick Rosen and Daniel Messling and their guests discuss the topics of energy transition, electromobility, electric cars and batteries from a scientific perspective. The podcast is produced by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
