The first hurdle for Karl Lauterbach's new hospital reform has been overcome. The federal cabinet has approved his plans. Karl Lauterbach is one step closer to his goal of improving the quality of the hospital system. But what will happen to the small clinics in rural areas, which are currently in a bad state? The SPD Federal Health Minister discussed this with journalist Antje Höning. Hospitals and clinics are currently paid on a flat-rate basis, explains Karl Lauterbach. The problem here is that hospitals carry out many procedures that are sometimes unnecessary or for which they are not qualified enough. He wants to change this by eliminating the flat-rate basis and introducing service groups to ensure quality. According to this principle, cancer treatments, for example, would be carried out in qualified clinics and remunerated accordingly. Small hospitals would receive higher flat rates for general treatments. This would enable everyone to concentrate on their areas and patients to receive good treatment. One point of criticism: Karl Lauterbach is forcing the state health ministers to implement reforms.
