Hortobágy National Park is the largest and oldest national park in the country, in the eyes of many the essence of Hungary, synonymous with the Hungarian puszta. The 167-meter-long Nine-Hole Bridge, the symbol of Hortobágy, is the longest road bridge built of stone in our country, and the busy main road 33 currently passes over it. 400 thousand locally fired bricks were used to build the bridge, which was opened in 1833, and according to legend, the bricks were bound together with mortar made with milk. For centuries, cattle herds were driven on the bridge, or on its predecessor, the wooden bridge, towards the markets of Western Europe. The legendary Nagyhortobágyi Csárda has been operating at the foot of the bridge for centuries; the pub and guest house, established in 1699, received its folk classicist style that is still visible today in 1781. In the building, which still functions as a csárda and is crowded with tourists, we find a kitchen that is not cheap, but uses high-quality organic ingredients. In the building, next to the restaurant, we can see a multimedia exhibition presenting the history of the Hortobágy inn, the transport in the steppe and the famous guests of the inn, with a costume rehearsal and photo spots. In the circular Korszín next to the Shepherd Museum, traditional local crafts come to life with the help of spectacular wax puppets. We can take a look into the workshops of various masters, including the gingerbread baker, the potter, the cobbler, and the blacksmith. Interesting programs await visitors almost all year round in the Hortobágy National Park, which are truly unique, landscape-specific and traditional.
