HORIZONTAL SIGNS Horizontal Signage Horizontal graphic signage is that executed on the pavement of a road for the purpose of controlling, warning, guiding or informing the user. They consist of stripes and marks made on the pavement, preferably with reflective paint, and in the colors yellow and white. Horizontal signage comes in five colors: YELLOW – used to regulate flows in opposite directions, to delimit spaces prohibited for parking and/or stopping, and to mark obstacles. RED – used to regulate spaces intended for the movement of light bicycles (cycle paths) and in symbols (e.g.: hospitals and pharmacies – cross). WHITE – used to regulate flows in the same direction; to delimit special spaces, stretches of roads, intended for regulated parking of vehicles in special conditions; to mark pedestrian crossings; to paint symbols and legends. BLUE – used to paint symbols in special parking areas or stopping areas for boarding and disembarking. BLACK – used to provide contrast between the pavement and the paint. The lanes can be continuous, interrupted and designated for pedestrians. SOLID YELLOW STRIP – When drawn along the roadway, it indicates that the vehicle cannot cross the other half of the lane. It divides traffic in opposite directions. If drawn transversally, it indicates the limit where the vehicle must stop when the signaling tells it to stop. SOLID YELLOW STRIP – CONTINUOUS WHITE STRIP – When drawn along the roadway, it divides lanes in flows of the same direction. It indicates that changing lanes (traffic in the same direction) is not permitted. They can also be drawn transversally on the roadway. Two by two, parallel, they delimit the pedestrian crossing area. INTERRUPTED WHITE STRIP – When drawn along the roadway, they indicate its division into two or more traffic lanes, allowing the vehicle to cross from one to the other. PEDESTRIAN CROSSING – The area transversal to the centerline of a properly signaled road, intended for pedestrians to cross. It is a necessary element on city streets because it is the area where pedestrians have priority over vehicles, aiming to offer them maximum security when crossing the roadway. It is also called a pedestrian crossing or pedestrian safety lane. Road markings are also used in areas adjacent to entrance and exit ramps, on approaches to road-rail crossings, in parking lots and vehicle stops on public roads, among others.
