The work “Pedagogy of Hope: a reunion with the Pedagogy of the Oppressed” is an apology for utopia. This is the opinion of professor and education researcher Jason Mafra. “The function of utopia is to unsettle, to make us move forward,” he explains in an exclusive interview with Instituto Claro. With a PhD in education and a professor at Universidade Nove de Julho, Mafra has dedicated himself to the work of Paulo Freire for 20 years, 11 of which were at Instituto Paulo Freire. Commenting on the educator’s reading of hope, Mafra assesses that the current scenario of threats to democracy experienced in Brazil and the world is not definitive.
