In Central America, thousands of Hondurans flee to the U.S. A dangerous journey that often ends in death. They flee poverty, gang violence and natural disasters. Honduras: Natural disasters such as tropical cyclones and floods repeatedly shake the country. Nearly 70 percent of the population lives in poverty, more than 50 percent in extreme poverty. Outbreaks of violence, gang wars and kidnappings are the order of the day. The murder rate is among the highest in the world. For many Hondurans, fleeing seems to be the only way out. Neither the high costs, nor the dangers of dying on the journey or being killed by human traffickers, nor the low chances of reaching the U.S. can deter them. It is often the men who leave, leaving behind their wives and children, who often never hear from their husbands and fathers again, even if they manage to live illegally in the United States. The money they promised to send home to their families never arrives. And so more and more women are forced to flee as well. Sometimes they take one child with them, leaving the others or all of them with relatives. The country is bleeding to death: in some regions, only the elderly and children remain in the villages. Charities try to help the poorest, but even these cannot stop the flood of escapes. #dwdocumentary #documentary #Honduras #displacement ـــــ DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
