Available until 05/08/2028 In recent years, extremely harsh homophobic bills have emerged on the African continent, such as in Uganda and Kenya. While investigating, the Sources team discovered the existence of an ultra-conservative American organization, very present in Africa: Family Watch International. Its president, Sharon Slater, has the ear of African leaders, such as Ugandan President Museveni and his wife. While investigating, we discovered traces of her lobbying with politicians on the continent, to whom she even offers ready-made bills. We also found a campaign conducted several years ago to defend a law that sent homosexuals to prison. In 2023, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni promulgated a law establishing prison sentences for homosexuals ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty. Six months later, the number of homophobic acts has quadrupled in the country. Far from being an isolated case, these repressive measures are evidence of the wave of homophobia that has shaken many African states in recent years. While investigating the subject, ARTE's open source investigative magazine discovered the existence of an ultraconservative American organization that is very influential in Africa: Family Watch International. Believing that the United States and Europe have lost their way to the traditional family values that it defends, its president Sharon Slater, also the author of the book Stand for the Family, is deploying her activism with African leaders. Continuing its research, the Sources team found traces of the lobbying that the latter has been carrying out for around fifteen years with politicians on the continent, to whom it offers turnkey bills criminalizing the LGBTQIA+ community, like the one tabled in 2023 by a Kenyan MP, similar to the one adopted by Uganda.
