Homemade soap has been used for centuries as a detergent for cleaning the body and clothes, thanks to its emulsifying and grease- and dirt-disintegrating properties. In the past, when industrial soap was not yet available, homemade soap was the main form of cleaning for most families. It was used to wash clothes, sheets and towels, as well as to clean household surfaces and dishes. In body care, homemade soap was used to wash the face, hands and body, as a beard cleanser and for shaving. Homemade soap was also used as a hair shampoo, thanks to its cleansing properties and slightly alkaline pH. Today, homemade soap is still widely used as a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to commercial detergents, as it is made with natural ingredients and can be customized to individual needs. Homemade soap can also be an original and personalized gift idea, for example for weddings, birthdays or holidays, as it can be created with personalized fragrances, colors and unique shapes. Caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide, is a white, crystalline chemical that comes in the form of beads or flakes. It is a strong, highly corrosive, water-soluble base used in many industries, including the production of detergents, paper, textiles, cosmetics, and cleaning products. Caustic soda is also used as a main ingredient in homemade soap making, as it reacts with oils and fats to form soap through the process of saponification. However, caustic soda is also a very dangerous substance if not handled properly, as it can cause severe skin burns, eye injuries, and respiratory injuries. It is therefore important to use protective gloves, goggles, and a mask when handling caustic soda and to work in a well-ventilated area. Additionally, caustic soda should be stored in a safe place and out of the reach of children and pets. If any accidents or injuries occur while using caustic soda, it is important to seek immediate medical or healthcare professional advice. This is one of the many Calabrian traditions that are part of my family! Once upon a time, pork lard was also used to make homemade soap. Today, olive oil is also used.
