There is a housing crisis, and that is no coincidence. Years of policy have caused the number of homeless people in the Netherlands to double in recent years. According to urban geographer Cody Hochstenbach, something really needs to be done about that. He is fighting against the government policy that has been making more and more Dutch people homeless for years. How would you go to work every day, maintain your social life and relax if you did not have a roof over your head? The importance of having a nice home has become apparent in recent months during the corona crisis. Yet that does not apply to more and more people. In recent years, the number of homeless people has doubled to around 40,000 Dutch people (a conservative estimate). More and more Dutch people with a job are also unable to find affordable housing and end up on the streets. How is that possible, in a small and rich country like the Netherlands? The rapidly growing homelessness is the result of decades of government policy, says urban geographer Cody Hochstenbach. In this video letter he calls on minister Kajsa Ollongren, responsible for housing policy, to fulfill her humanitarian duty and embrace social housing again. The policy of the past few years, says Hochstenbach, has focused on shrinking the social housing stock to make room for a more commercial housing market. A market that mainly rich (foreign) investors can profit from, but which is no longer accessible to an increasing part of the Dutch population. http://tegenlicht.vpro.nl/
