More than one in three homeless people is over 50 years old, and the trend is rising. People like them age faster and often need care earlier. There are hardly any suitable places to go. A new emergency care service at Hamburg Central Station wants to change that. Old and needy homeless people can get care there free of charge and without an appointment. Former wine merchant Manu Mattern has been homeless for over ten years. The 62-year-old has chronic wounds on his legs and is dependent on regular bandage changes. Life on the street turns people like Manu into care cases at an early age. Now he is getting help. For six months he has been going regularly to the new emergency care station at Hamburg Central Station. The Railway Mission project is unique in Germany, and all services are as barrier-free as possible. Any homeless person can get help here without appointments or registration, without red tape. But Manu Mattern also shows the limits of the service. The long-time smoker is at risk of having one of his legs amputated. He urgently needs to go to hospital for further treatment. Rainer Manuschewski lost his job in December 2020 and quickly ended up on the streets. Homelessness has made his arthritis worse, and he can no longer stand or walk for long periods of time. The 68-year-old has now found accommodation in the Harburg Huus, where he can stay for the time being. Rainer dreams of his own four walls, but suitable places, especially for older homeless people, are rare. Wolfgang Freitag was lucky; he already has a place in a housing project for elderly homeless people. The 74-year-old was homeless for 30 years and made a living as a day laborer. For almost six years he has lived in a special residence called Wohnen60plus in Münster. Wolfgang has his own apartment and is still part of the shared apartment, where he can receive care and support in his everyday life when he needs it. #homeless #old #reportage Video available until 02/07/2029 Link to the media library: https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/111748-...
