In this episode of Danny's world, Danny Ghosen goes out in Nijmegen with people who provide medical assistance to the homeless. They encounter many people who avoid care, while the need for help is often very great for these people. Life on the streets is hard, and due to increasing poverty and the deteriorating housing market, it is only getting harder. Danny goes out with the Nijmegen street nurse Wendy. Assisted by local police officer Jan, she actively searches for homeless people early in the morning every week to help them with medical emergencies that people are ashamed of. Wendy also visits them to show them where they can get help, find (temporary) shelter or be seen by a doctor. In this way, she hopes to ensure that these people also quickly become healthy again, or stay healthy. In the years that Wendy has been doing this work, she has seen the contrast between the homeless on the one hand and the rest of society on the other increase significantly. With increased prosperity among large groups, understanding for the homeless has plummeted, according to Wendy. Neighbourhood committees that start procedures with expensive lawyers against plans for housing for people from shelters are a painful illustration for her. Life on the streets is naturally hard, a homeless person has a life expectancy that is about ten to fifteen years lower than that of the average Dutch person. Danny Ghosen goes in search of what is wrong in society in Danny's world. He investigates tensions and problems in society and meets people who are often invisible, who push the boundaries, have crossed them or feel excluded. Danny enters everywhere, he asks questions and does not judge. #dannyswereld #danny #vpro
