On February 4, 1954, it was transferred to the category of a city of republican subordination. It is located on the banks of the Kura River. The city of Mingachevir borders Yevlakh district to the east, south and west, and the Mingachevir Reservoir to the north. Mingachevir district was established in connection with the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Kura River. It received the status of a district on November 11, 1948. It is located 323 km from Baku. It is 17 km from the Baku-Tbilisi railway. The republican-scale airport is located 30 km away in Yevlakh district, and the international airport is located 80 km away in Ganja district. Geographically, the district is established in the center of the republic on both banks of the Kura River. The Mingachevir Reservoir is located 3 km to the northwest of the district. The volume of the reservoir is 15.7 billion cubic meters, its length is 70 km, maximum width is 18 km, water cover area is 605 km², average depth is 27 meters (maximum depth is 83 meters), level variation is 5-7 meters. The length of the dam blocking the reservoir is 1550 meters. The climate of the Mingachevir region is mild and warm. The average temperature in January is plus 2-3 degrees, in July it is 27-30 degrees.
