Holstein Friesian cattle: Rare in Bavaria, but the dominant breed of cattle in milk production worldwide. The black and white cows of Holstein breeder Ewald Demling from Lower Franconia give twice as much milk as an average Bavarian Fleckvieh cow. The decisive factors: feed, genetics, hoof care. Ewald and Erich Demling breed Holstein Friesians on their dairy farm in Lower Franconia. The cows give an average of more than 40 liters of milk a day. This breed of cattle dominates milk production worldwide - world-class cows, in other words. Holsteins achieve spectacular results in the USA, Holland, northern Germany - but also in Bavaria. In order for the cows to give so much milk, they need good feed and that is what they get on the Demlings' farm: silage made from protein-rich alfalfa clover, because protein is essential for milk production. In addition, there is rapeseed meal, dried beet pulp, propionic acid, bacteria, yeasts and the best hay. The exact recipe is a trade secret. The good cow feed ensures that the vet is needed as little as possible. This saves money that the farmers can put back into caring for the cows. Hoof trimmers are regularly brought in from Holland to care for the cows' hooves. In this way, the cows grow old healthily despite their enormous performance: some cows in the barn already have seven or eight calves and a lifetime production of over 100,000 liters of milk. Good feed and good care also guarantee the high milk yields: the Demlings' barn average is 14,000 liters of cow's milk per year. Author: Ulrich Detsch From the broadcast on April 28, 2023.
