Beautiful Saarland: Saar loop near Mettlach, Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site and an idyllic hike to the Celtic ring wall in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. Have you ever been to Saarland? How did you like it? And do you have any other tips? Write us your experiences and recommendations in the comments! We start at the foot of the Saar loop near Mettlach. There we spend the night in the Saarschleifen Lodge right on the bank. I have a maisonette apartment. The bed is upstairs and I already have a great view of the Saar from here. From there we go up to the Cloef. From up there we have a great view of the Saar loop. But it gets even more beautiful if we climb even further. To do this, we walk along the treetop path between oaks, beeches and Douglas firs towards a viewing tower. From above we have the best view of the impressive loop. It forms almost a complete circle. Every now and then ships chug past. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig also runs nearby. This is a long-distance hiking trail with a length of 410 km. Then we head on towards Saarbrücken. There we visit the primeval forest outside the city gates. For over 10 years, the forest area has been left to itself. This leaves a mystical, wild forest landscape behind. And right in the middle of it all, Little Fuji rises. The pointed cone dump is now also overgrown, so we only have a view of another dump. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Völklinger Hütte is very close by. The landscape of steel and iron reminds me of the setting of a dystopian film, when there is only desert and steppe on our planet. And in between there are a few iron buildings. During the industrial era, the Völklinger Hütte was an important ironworks. At its peak, 17,000 people worked here at the same time and produced up to 5,000 tons of pig iron per day. We visit the blast furnaces at a height of 45 meters. From here we have a great view over the gigantic site. Before we start the next day, we fortify ourselves with a delicious currywurst at the Dörsterhof in Wadern. Then we continue into the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. We hike along a section of the Dollberg loop to the Celtic ring wall. We pass through a pristine forest, have a great view of the Nonnweiler dam and then reach the impressive remains of the gigantic wall. It is still up to 12 m high and 40 m wide at its highest point. In Roman times, in the 1st century BC, it served as a defensive wall and was notorious. Even Julius Caesar knew about it. At the end of the day we reach Lake Losheim. The Draussen am See outdoor festival will take place here next weekend. There are workshops, lectures and concerts. Tickets are still available. My YouTube colleague @Marius_Quast will also be there and will report on the event. Afterwards you can visit his channel. I'm ending the day at the lake and looking forward to cooling off. Please give me a thumbs up if you liked the video & remember to subscribe. Thanks for watching & see you next time :)
