Unfortunately, no French company was selected. Verney-Carron wanted to apply but its application was rejected for two reasons. The first is that to be eligible, it was necessary to have a turnover of at least 80 million euros, which was not the case for the Saint-Etienne company, and the second reason is that Verney-Carron would not have had the industrial capacity to quickly supply the 90,000 assault rifles needed. That left FN Herstal with the SCAR-L, Heckler & Koch with the HK416, Beretta with the ARX160, Sig Sauer with the MCX and the Croatian company HS Produkt with the VHS2 which was the only bullpup in competition. All these weapons were intensively tested by the Technical Section of the Army and it was finally the HK416 that was selected. On September 23, 2016, the DGA officially announced the adoption of the HK416F. The contract with Heckler & Koch will cover 38,505 HK 416F (the standard version) and 54,575 HK416FC (the compact version) to be delivered by the end of 2021, then 12,000 rifles per year until 2028.
