Until the end of the 19th century, Anatolia was largely unknown to scholars of antiquity. Egypt and Mesopotamia were the only Near Eastern cultures worthy of interest. The Hittites, the main Bronze Age civilization on the Anatolian peninsula, were only the supporting actor mentioned in Egyptian texts and the evil adversary in the Bible. The discovery of the Boğazköy tablets in 1906 and their decipherment in 1917 by Bedřich Hrozný changed our view of the area, allowing us to learn about a powerful state that was one of the main powers in the region for 500 years. Yet, in the popular imagination they remain largely forgotten. In this lecture we present, as a humble introduction, the kingdom of Hatti, in the hope of capturing your interest and encouraging your desire to learn more about it. Warning: The Hittites are addictive. Once you meet them, you won't be able to put them aside. Speaker: Josep Asensi. Doctor and writer.
