The history of Vietnam begins with the arrival of the first humans in its current territory around 65 thousand years ago. Around 500 BC, the Dynastic Period began in Vietnam, a long period in which several dynasties took turns in power and, despite many internal conflicts and attempted invasions, managed to preserve the country's independence. After being unified in the early 19th century, Vietnam remained independent until the middle of that century, when it was colonized by France and became part of the Colony of French Indochina, a status it maintained until the end of World War II, when it was divided between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. After the Vietnam War, the country was unified under the communist regime of North Vietnam and faced serious economic problems until the beginning of the 21st century, when a rapid economic recovery began.
