The history of South Sudan began approximately 15,000 years ago, when Nilo-Saharan-speaking peoples arrived in the region. Around 5,000 BC, these peoples divided into the linguistic families called Central Sudanese and Eastern Sudanese, and around 3,000 BC, the Nilotic peoples emerged in this region. These peoples gave rise to several ethnic groups such as the Shilluk, Dinka, Nuer and Bari. Geographical barriers protected these groups from the advance of Islam until the 19th century, when the region was invaded by the Egyptians of the Ottoman Empire. In 1882, Egypt was conquered by the British and the region of South Sudan entered a process of isolation from the rest of Sudan that lasted until the 1940s, causing the region's economic development to suffer. After Sudan's independence in 1956, some insurgent movements from the south entered into confrontation with the rest of Sudan and the Islamic policies imposed on the non-Christian majority in the south sparked a separatist movement that culminated in a devastating civil war and the subsequent independence of South Sudan in 2011. In this video, you will learn in more detail the history of South Sudan, the newest country in the world and also considered the poorest country in the world in several statistics.
